These decks are named after the French psychic Marie Anne Lenormand (1772-1843) and is said to have been as regular reader to Empress Josephine. After her death and her family having burnt her occult books etc and number of decks came out. These cards which generally follow a similar pattern consist 36 cards from a normal playing deck, basically the Ace, 6,7,8,9,10, Jack, Queen and King. These were originally based on The Game of Hope (Chance) by Johann Kaspar Hechtel in Nuremberg from 1799. Each card has an illustration along with a verse or oracle. An example is the Ace of Clubs features a picture of a ring and the verse ‘Of a happy marriage talks, the ring on the right hand, but on the left it announces quarrel, and a break of the love hand. There are a variety of variants around created by followers. This edition was published in September 1997.
